Nelson Mandela’s mandate

To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.  Nelson Mandela, 1995

For me personally and in my own life, it is the most demanding principle I have ever encountered.  In actual practice, it is usually going to be more demanding than being prepared to lay down one’s life, which, in any case, most of us are not called upon to do.  And it would seem to me it rules out most martyrdoms of any religious persuasion.
